Farfan seals last eight berth

Jefferson Farfan struck twice as Schalke fought back from an early deficit to earn a 3-1 win which ensured their progression through to the quarter-finals of the Champions League at the expense of Valencia.

Valencia, having drawn the first leg 1-1 at home, needed just 17 minutes to cancel out Schalke’s away goal when Ricardo Costa headed them in front at the Arena AufSchalke, but the home side turned things around with two goals either side of half-time.

Farfan drew the hosts level with a brilliant 25-yard free-kick in the 40th minute before Mario Gavranovic netted seven minutes into the second half with an effort that sneaked in after hitting both posts.

Then, after Valencia had missed a number of chances to get back into the game and Gavranovic had hit the woodwork twice more, Schalke sealed the victory and their qualification when Farfan netted their third deep into injury-time.

Schalke came into the game in disappointing form and with question marks over the long-term future of coach Felix Magath, and the Gelsenkirchen outfit’s fans must have feared things would get even worse as Valencia started well.

In the eighth minute Los Che defender Jeremy Mathieu saw a shot deflected just wide, and then nine minutes later the visitors got themselves in front.

Mehmet Topal did well down the left before firing in a fiercely-struck cross that Costa did well to head past Manuel Neuer at his near post.

Schalke striker Raul had a chance to cancel that goal out almost immediately but he headed wide, and soon after that Valencia almost made it 2-0 but Christoph Metzelder did well to block Aritz Aduriz’s effort.

The Royal Blues looked set to go into the break still trailing but, with five minutes to go, they were handed a chance to draw level when they won a free-kick just outside the area.

It was a dangerous position, and Farfan made the most of it as he curled a superb free-kick into the top corner past Vicente Guaita, who got a fingertip to the ball but could not keep it out.

That was a huge boost for Schalke going into the interval, and it got better at the start of the second half as they took the lead.

Guaita could only push a cross down to Farfan inside the area, and although the Valencia goalkeeper managed to save the Schalke goalscorer’s resulting shot, the ball fell perfectly for Gavranovic, whose effort hit the inside of the near post, rolled across the line and hit the far post as well before going in.

That goal set Schalke on their way to the last eight, but they had to survive some nervy moments before the end.

Within four minutes of Gavranovic’s goal Aduriz had two great chances to score, but he fired his first into the side netting with Neuer out of position and then, after being put clean through, he was denied by a brilliant save by the Schalke goalkeeper and captain.

Tino Costa then missed another good opening for Valencia while Neuer was called into action again to save a Juan Mata shot.

Valencia could not force an equaliser though, and Schalke twice came close to killing the game off late on when Gavranovic hit the woodwork on separate occasions.

The first saw his thunderous drive deflected onto the near post by Guaita, and he then saw a brilliant 35-yard lob hit the Valencia crossbar with Guaita struggling.

Schalke were celebrating a third goal late on though as Farfan broke away before dinking the ball over Guaita to settle the contest.

Argentina have risen to fourth in the FIFA world ranking, leapfrogging Brazil to become South America’s top side.

Sergio Batista’s side, who failed to progress further than the quarter-finals at the 2010 World Cup, have been rewarded for a 2-1 friendly victory over Portugal and reach their highest position since topping the rankings in June 2008, while Brazil lost 1-0 to France in their most recent effort to drop into fifth place – their lowest ranking in two years.

The only other change in the top ten sees Croatia move past Portugal to eighth, as Spain continue their reign in the No. 1 spot.

In Africa, Zambia return to the top 100, thanks to a 4-0 win over Swaziland, and Niger drop out to 104th. Ghana remain the top performing team in 16th, and World Cup hosts South Africa have reached their best position since 2005 in 46th.

Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini believes the Europa League is now ”a great competition” as his side prepare to face Dynamo Kiev in the first leg of the last-16.

Mancini feels his team will have to be at their best if they are to win the trophy and end a 35-year trophy drought, especially in Kiev where Dynamo have not lost in six UEFA home matches since a 2-1 Champions League group stage defeat by Barcelona in December 2009.

”The Europa League is a great competition,” he said. ”There are big teams in it. You can get to the quarter-finals and meet an important team.

”There are a lot of well-known sides in the competition. All the teams we can play usually play in the Champions League. It is a little Champions League. All the teams are big ones.”

Mancini would love two trophies as well as a place in the Champions League next season – as his side face Reading in their next game in the FA Cup on Sunday – but knows it will be tough.

He said: ”We will try to reach the final if it is possible, both in the Europa League and the FA Cup. It depends on our players recovering their strength.”

Spanish forward David Silva is only too aware of the difficulty facing City at the Valeriy Lobanovskiy Stadium. He played and scored there in the 2008-09 UEFA Cup but Valencia went out on the away goals rule.

Silva recalled: ”It’s a difficult place to go to. We got a 1-1 draw so we didn’t do too badly. They’re a difficult team and at their stadium it’s very tough but we’re excited about our chances of going through.”

Xavi has offered an uncompromising appraisal of Arsenal’s performance in their 3-1 defeat to Barcelona on Tuesday night, saying he was disappointed by the lack of intent shown by the Gunners.

Arsenal failed to muster a single shot at Camp Nou as they were eliminated 4-3 on aggregate, the first time a team has failed to do so since Opta’s Champions League records began in 2003.

While their goal came from a Sergio Busquets own goal, Lionel Messi scored twice – once with an exquisite chip and volley and once from the penalty spot – with Xavi himself also on target as Barcelona progressed to the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger felt aggrieved at a second yellow card shown to Robin van Persie when he was adjudged to have kicked the ball away after referee Massimo Busacca whistled for offside, but Xavi felt the decision to dismiss the Dutchman was the correct one.

Barca’s captain for the night was also surprised by the overly-cautious approach of an Arsenal side that won the first leg 2-1 thanks to some expert counter-attacking.

“This is a fair result,” Xavi told the Barcelona official website. “We were the superior team both in the away game and at home. There’s justice in football. They had clearly come here to defend. They didn’t even have one single shot on goal. I expected a lot more from them to be honest.

“[Javier] Mascherano and [Sergio] Busquets are simply amazing for the team, while Leo [Messi] once again stepped up to make the difference. The only thing that could have been better was our finishing. We should have scored more and we suffered too much. We could have killed the game a lot sooner.

“Arsenal really didn’t want to play football. All they cared about was defending. The red card did affect the game, but the decision was right in my opinion.”
