The Seattle Sounders kept up the pressure on the Western Conference-leading Los Angeles Galaxy with a 4-3 Major League Soccer win over the Colorado Rapids.

The Rapids were twice ahead in the match, through Wells Thompson and then Jeff Larentowitcz, but first Alvaro Fernandez and then Roger Levesque got the Sounders back on level terms before Freddy Montero and Mauro Rosales put them in the driving seat in the final 10 minutes.

Caleb Folan grabbed a late consolation for Colorado but they could not force a leveller as Seattle moved within a point of the Galaxy, albeit having played a game more as Los Angelese took part in a friendly match against Real Madrid.

Elsewhere, Jack Jewsbury’s 25th-minute penalty earned the Portland Timbers a 1-0 triumph at the Chicago Fire, the hosts’ cause not helped by the 63rd-minute dismissal of Yamith Cuesta.

The Eastern Conference-leading New York Red Bulls were held to a 0-0 draw at Chivas USA.

The Columbus Crew‘s clash with the San Jose Earthquakes and FC Dallas‘ home game against DC United also ended in goalless stalemates.

Aurelien Collin’s last-minute equaliser, meanwhile, earned Sporting Kansas City a 1-1 draw against nine-man Houston Dynamo. The hosts, who opened the scoring through Brad Davis, had Colin Clark and Brian Ching sent off in the second-half.

The Vancouver Whitecaps‘ game against Real Salt Lake was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.

Alecsandro scored twice on Saturday night as Vasco da Gama came from behind to clinch a 2-1 home win over bottom team Atletico Paranaense in the Brazilian Campeonato.

Kleberson’s ninth-minute opener had put the visitors ahead but Alecsandro equalised on the stroke of half-time and then bagged the winner 20 minutes from the end to move Vasco up to fifth in the standings.

The result left Paranaense as the only winless team in the Brazilian top-flight after Avai secured their first victory of the season to climb a place to 18th, William’s 10th-minute goal earning a 1-0 triumph at Atletico Goianiense.

Borges’ penalty four minutes before half-time proved decisive for Santos in their 2-1 win over Atletico Mineiro after they had seen Danilo’s opener cancelled out by a Jonatas Obina penalty.

Coritiba leapfrogged Fluminense in mid-table after beating the Rio de Janeiro side 3-1. First-half goals from Marcos Aurelio and Fabio Pereira had the hosts in control and Bill extended their advantage seven minutes after the break before substitute Matheus Carvalho netted a late consolation for the visitors.

J.League leaders Kashiwa Reysol slipped to a 3-2 defeat at Kawasaki Frontale, despite battling back from two goals down.

Kawasaki were 2-0 up at the break thanks to goals from Takuro Yajima and Yu Kobayashi, but an own foal from Kosuke Kikuchi nine minutes after the interval let the visitors back in it.

Leandro Domingues completed the comeback after 71 minutes, but Juninho struck from the spot six minutes from time to earn his side all three points.

It means Yokohama F. Marinos, one point behind Kashiwa in second, can go top on Sunday when they face Omiya Ardija.

Gamba Osaka let 2-0 and 3-2 leads slip to lose 4-3 at Vantforet Kofu. Goals from Lee Keun-ho Lee and Shoki Hirai put the visitors in control, before Mike Havenaar and Toshihiko Uchiyama struck back.

Naohiro Takahara fired in the winner in the last minute as Shimizu S-Pulse came from behind to beat Albirex Niigata 2-1.

Shinji Ono had scored from the spot to cancel out Naoki Ishikawa’s fifth-minute opener.

K-League leaders Jeonbuk Motors dropped points for a third successive week after they were held to a 1-1 draw at Gwangju FC.

It could have been worse for the AFC Champions League quarter-finalists, who have yet to win in July after also being held to draws by FC Seoul and Ulsan, as they needed an own goal to earn a point.

Lee Sung-ki put Gwangju ahead in the 57th minute, slotting in the rebound after Park Dong-ki has seen his shot blocked, but Jeonbuk salvaged a draw with an equaliser soon after when Park Won-jae’s cross bounced off Kim Su-beom into his own net.

“For us, a draw feels like a defeat,” said Jeonbuk coach Choi Kang-hee. “This is the third game without a win. There is nothing especially wrong with how we are playing and with the mood in the camp but we need to take a look at things. We have a home game next week and will get ready for that.”

Second-placed Pohang Steelers can cut the gap at the top to one point if they defeat FC Seoul on Sunday.

Jeju United stay in third after drawing 2-2 at Seongnam Ilhwa.

Jeju looked on course for a second successive defeat when they fell 2-0 down following strikes in quick succession from Brazilians Heverton and Everton Santos in the first half

However, two goals in the final 14 minutes from Park Hyun-beom saw Jeju hit back and claim a share of the spoils.

Busan I’Park go fourth, level on 29 points with Jeju, following a 2-1 win at Sangju Sangmu. Kim Cheol-ho put Sangju ahead but goals from Han Ji-ho and Park Tae-min gave Busan the win.

Suwon Bluewings edged closer to the play-off places with a 1-0 victory at home to Incheon United, new signing Stevica Ristic netting the winner just before the break with his second goal in successive games.

Elsewhere, Ulsan Horang-I won 2-1 at bottom club Gangwon FC with goals from Kim Shin-wook and Lee Jin-ho cancelling out an effort from Lee Jung-woon for the hosts.

Gyeongnam FC thrashed Daejeon Citizen 7-1. Yoon Bit Garam, Lee Hyo-gyun, Lee Hoon, Park Min, Luke Devere, Jordan and Lucio got the goals for Gyeongnam while Lee Woon-hee got a late consolation for Daejeon.
