Manchester United midfielder Park Ji-sung has rejected suggestions that he could leave the club this summer.

Park was one of a number of long-serving United players tipped to move on this summer, with Wes Brown and John O’Shea already having completed transfers to Sunderland.

But Park, who has been at Old Trafford for six years, insists he will not be the next to quit the club for pastures new.

He told the Sunday Mirror: “There’s no truth at all that I would leave United – I want to stay here and I have no reason to leave. I would like to stay here for life, of course – why not? It’s the best club in the world.

“I remember Guus Hiddink [his boss at PSV] said I wouldn’t play many games if I went to Manchester United but he wanted me to stay at PSV at the time.

“I met Guus this summer and he said he was proud of me and what I have achieved at United.”

Gael Clichy has risked the wrath of Arsenal fans by declaring he left the club for Manchester City because he was tired of missing out on silverware.

Clichy says he could have penned a new deal at Emirates Stadium but could not face the prospect of more seasons like the 2010-11 campaign.

Arsenal have now not won a trophy since 2005, with a string of disappointments turning last term into one of the most disappointing seasons under Arsene Wenger’s stewardship. Now Clichy believes he has found a club who can deliver the success he craves.

Speaking on the club’s pre-season tour to the United States, he said: “After spending eight years with Arsenal it would have been easy to sign a new contract to stay there because they’re a fantastic club that will always be challenging for trophies.

“But it got to a point for me where I didn’t want to just challenge for the titles only to be disappointed in the final weeks of the season. I wanted to play for a club that would win them. I joined City because I felt that this was a club ready to win important trophies over the next few years.

“When Sheikh Mansour first took over here there was a lot of scepticism in the game and I was one of the sceptics.

“But for me, last season proved City are now one of the top clubs in the game. I have been at City only a week but I look around and see a squad that is strong.”

Clichy’s comments come just a day after Wenger accused City boss Roberto Mancini of a lack of respect over his public pursuit of Samir Nasri, who the Italian wants to add to his squad in the next fortnight.

Andre Villas-Boas claims to be relaxed about Chelsea’s inactivity in the transfer window since his arrival from Porto.

Despite seeing rivals Liverpool, Manchester United and Manchester City making several signings in order to strengthen their squads ahead of the coming season, Chelsea have done little more than agree a transfer fee for Belgian goalkeeping prospect Thibaut Courtois. Villas-Boas, however, feels Chelsea aren’t in need of a major overhaul and would prefer to tweak his side.

“We have agreed a fee with Genk for Courtois but personal terms still have to be agreed with the player. But it is more about getting the best out of these players we have than making radical changes.

“If he (Modric) comes, he comes, but if he doesn’t he doesn’t. Spurs have the right to defend their players. Losing Michael Essien for six months was a big blow, bearing in mind that was a position we were already looking at strengthening.

“But we have our targets identified throughout Europe and we’re not going to take those decisions lightly. We will choose the right people.”

As well as a midfielder, Chelsea are thought to be interested in buying a striker and a left-winger, with Romelu Lukaku and Scott Parker reportedly under consideration.

Rangers skipper David Weir has signed a new one-year contract with the Ibrox club.

The deal was finally sealed on Saturday ahead of the friendly with Linfield in which Weir, 41, captained the side to a 4-1 win.

Weir, whose family still live south of the border, told the club’s official website: “It’s taken a while but it’s good to get it sorted out now. I can’t think of a better place to play my football. I’ve obviously got commitments to my family and from that point of view it’s not ideal, but football-wise it’s a one brainer.

“This is the place I want to play and as long as the manager thinks I can still do a job then I’m happy to sign here. The family thing is obviously a consideration but it works well for me at the moment because I have a good balance.

“When I’m in Glasgow I’m focused on the football and doing what I need to the night before games and the likes. Things like rest that I might not get when I’m at home. The same is true at home where my full focus can be on my family when I’m there.”

Rangers manager Ally McCoist has also revealed he had agreed a fee with Aston Villa for Carlos Cuellar and is now looking to agree personal terms with the former Ibrox defender. Weir would welcome the return of the Spaniard to the Light Blues’ squad even though it might cost him his place in the side.

The former Hearts and Everton stopper said: “The manager was honest and told me that he was trying to get players in and that there would be competition, but I welcome that. You want a challenge to keep you on your toes and make sure you are always striving to perform at your best.

“Carlos would give that because he’s top class. He was only up here for a season but everybody saw how good he was that year so we’d obviously love to have him back. People know what we would be getting with Carlos, there is no real mystery to it and that is a big thing in favour of the move.

“It’s definitely an area the manager is looking to add to and if we want players to improve the squad Carlos is certainly one that would fit that bill.”

Neymar’s agent claims Barcelona are vying with Real Madrid for the player’s services.

Neymar is one of the hottest properties in the summer transfer market. His agent, Wagner Ribeiro, insists a move to Madrid, long-standing admirers of the player, is Neymar’s preference but that Barcelona are the more attractive option for his current club.

Ribeiro claims Barca are prepared to wait until after they and Copa Libertadores winners Santos have competed in the Club World Cup in December, which would enable Santos president Luis Alvaro De Oliveira to honour a pledge he made that Neymar would lead the team at the tournament in Japan before moving to Europe.

Ribeiro told AS: “The exact situation is as follows: Barcelona want him next year and will pay next year, Madrid want him now and are prepared to pay now.

“The main problem is that the kid (Neymar) wants to play in the Club World Cup against Barcelona, and Santos are using their force to make him choose Barca.

“The numbers being talked about by both clubs (Madrid and Barcelona) are good, but Neymar would prefer a move to Madrid.”

Ribeiro insists Neymar will make a final decision once Brazil’s involvement in the Copa America is at an end.
