Alan Pardew is excited by Newcastle’s summer recruitment plans – but will put them on ice until their Premier League status is assured.

Pardew has instructed his scouting team to scour the world for new talent as he attempts to build a squad capable of establishing the club in the upper reaches of the division.

However, he knows he must first ensure they remain in the top flight by making a strong final push, starting with Saturday’s visit of Wolves to St James’ Park.

Pardew said: “That focus is something that excites me, but it is very much secondary in my mind at the minute because the job in hand is to make sure that we are a Premier League side.

“The way the league is congested and how tight it is – 36 points at this time with eight games to go, we should have a fair bit of breathing space, but we haven’t, of course, because the team at the top of the relegation area has 32.

“It’s a period when you have to concentrate and give everything in every game, and as long as I am manager, that’s what we will do.”

Mick McCarthy’s men will head for Tyneside sitting inside the relegation zone – seven places, but just four points adrift of Newcastle – and anything but a positive result for the Magpies could see them sucked to the fringes of the mire.

Newcastle have taken just one point from their last three games, two of which were played at home. They have not won on their own turf since January 5, when West Ham were trounced 5-0.

That run of four games includes creditable draws with north London duo Tottenham and, in spectacular style, Arsenal, but there is little doubt that a significant improvement is required if they are to end the season in comfort rather than scrapping for points.

Pardew said: “You want to win your home games – it’s important. It’s important for your fans and everybody who turns up. We have 50,000 people there and we want them to go home with a smile on their face having seen their team win, and we haven’t done that enough this year.

“We have got some important home games to come and the position in the league will be determined by how strong we are at home from now on in.

“We have to be really, really strong and make sure we compete with Wolves as they have competed, to be fair to Mick and his staff, almost every game – and so have we, for the best part. That will be hard against Wolves, but that’s what we will try to do.”

Pardew and McCarthy know each other of old, and the Newcastle boss is under no illusions as to what to expect from his Wolves counterpart.

He said: “His interviews tell you everything about Mick – it’s straight, it’s honest and his teams will give everything until the last knockings.”

McCarthy, of course, will be without striker Kevin Doyle, who suffered knee ligament damage on international duty with the Republic of Ireland last weekend, but Pardew will be without Doyle’s Ireland team-mate Leon Best through injury and key midfielder Cheick Tiote through suspension, while Jose Enrique and Stephen Ireland remain big doubts.

That has simply served to illustrate the club’s need for summer recruits. Assistant boss John Carver was in Dublin last week amid rumours that the Magpies are trailing striker Shane Long and keeper Keiren Westwood, although with Celtic having been told to forget signing Fraser Forster, the latter appears not to be a target.

Pardew said: “It would be silly for them not to be on our radar – but everybody is on our radar.

“But not so much the goalkeeping situation because we have got Steve Harper, Fraser Forster and Tim Krul, and I don’t think, if I am honest, that’s going to change. There are other areas in which we need to strengthen.”

Injury-plagued Rio Ferdinand has given Manchester United a timely boost by returning to training just two weeks after manager Sir Alex Ferguson had effectively ruled him out for the rest of the season.

Ferdinand, 32, has been out of action since picking up a calf strain in the warm-up prior to United’s shock defeat at Wolves at the start of February.

After making slow progress in his recovery, Ferguson admitted the club were “not looking at this as a short-term situation” but the former England skipper returned to training on Wednesday and, although he is likely to miss the first leg of the Champions League quarter-final against Chelsea, he has a chance of featuring when United welcome Fulham to Old Trafford on April 9.

“He’s started training, he trained this morning but I think you know the Friday morning session is not excessive, it’s just a light session for the players,” said Ferguson.

“I could bring him back tomorrow and give him a few days off afterwards but I think he’s more likely to be fit for the Fulham game.”

Ferguson may ultimately conclude it is worth taking a gamble given none of his other injured defenders will be back to face Chelsea, whilst a few may be available for Fulham.

Rafael, John O’Shea and Wes Brown could all tackle Mark Hughes’ men. But none of that trio will make the trip to Stamford Bridge, when Jonny Evans will be available as he serves a three-match domestic ban.

None of this helps his team selection for Saturday, when Ferguson accepts filling the right-back slot is going to be a major issue.

“We have to solve that and find the right solution,” he said.

It seems almost certain Brazilian Fabio will fill the void, with Chris Smalling partnering skipper Nemanja Vidic in central defence.

At least Ferguson finally has options in midfield. Park Ji-Sung could make his first start since he left for Asian Cup duty in Qatar, whilst Anderson is likely to be on the bench at Upton Park after recovering from a knee injury it was initially suggested would rule him out for the season.

However, Darren Fletcher is still troubled by a virus, whilst Owen Hargreaves’ United career now looks to be at an end following the shoulder problem he picked up in training.

“It is another huge setback for the lad,” said Ferguson.

Unbeaten Argentinos Juniors climbed to second place in the Clausura with a 2-0 away win against Banfield.

Franco Niell scored the opening goal after 31 minutes and substitute Mauro Bogado added the second in the 79th minute as Argentinos Juniors improved their record to three wins and five draws from eight games.

Estudiantes, a point better off and with a game in hand on their new nearest rivals, continue to lead the division.

Independiente won 2-1 away to Gimnasia La Plata despite going down to 10 men early in the second half.

Abel Masuero headed the hosts ahead after 19 minutes but Independiente levelled when Nestor Silvera took advantage of a fumble by veteran goalkeeper Gaston Sessa to prod home from three yards.

Carlos Matheu was dismissed a minute later for a second bookable offence, but Independiente continued to push for a second goal and were rewarded in the second minute of stoppage-time when they counter-attacked and Cristian Pellerano rifled a low shot past Sessa for the winner.

Real Madrid striker Emmanuel Adebayor says he has not yet given up hope of clinching the league title and has backed Villarreal to cause Barcelona “big problems” on Saturday.

Barcelona are currently five points clear at the top of La Liga and, as they have suffered just one defeat all season, many believe Madrid will struggle to make up the gap.

However, Adebayor believes if they win all their remaining games in the league – which includes El Clasico on April 17 – they can be crowned champions.

“If I didn’t believe we could win La Liga I wouldn’t play football again,” he said on the club’s official website. “We have to win nine games to dream about winning the title.

“Don’t get me wrong – it’s not going to be easy – but we have to manage to do that and see what happens next.”

Barca face a potentially tricky game at third-placed Villarreal this weekend, and Adebayor is optimistic that they can aid Madrid’s cause.

“Villarreal play good football and could cause an upset against Barcelona,” he said. “It will be tough for Barça to face Villarreal away from home.

“I think it’s going to be a very good game. I believe Villarreal have the right instruments to cause big problems for Barcelona.”

Adebayor also reiterated that he wants to make his loan switch from Manchester City permanent.

“This is a fantastic club,” he said. “The atmosphere and the way we work are great for players. I hope I stay here as long as possible. I don’t just want to stay here – I want to win titles as well. That’s what I’m here for.”
