Stoke City manager Tony Pulis labelled the assistant referee’s failure to rule out Carlos Vela’s late equaliser “a shocking decision”, after the Mexican stole a share of the points for West Brom on Monday.

Television replays suggested Vela was narrowly offside when Steven Reid’s inswinging cross came in, but the assistant’s flag stayed down and allowed the subsequent goal to stand – leaving Pulis furious.

“As a performance, that’s as disappointing as we’ve been all season,” Pulis told Sky Sports. “Give West Brom credit for coming back at us, but looking at their goal it’s a shocking decision from the linesman.

“If he can’t get that right what is he doing officiating at this level? They’ve got to get those decisions right, they’re very, very important.”

Pulis was further angered by an incident in the aftermath of the final whistle, as Baggies defender Jonas Olsson damaged a picture hanging in the tunnel at the Britannia Stadium on his way back to the dressing room. “The lad Olsson has smashed the picture, I don’t know why,” he said. “It’s very disappointing when you’ve got a memento of this football club on the wall and somebody does that. We’ll leave it to Roy [Hodgson] to deal with.”

West Brom boss Hodgson admitted he was upset by his player’s conduct, after a game that was physical but never appeared likely to cross the line.

“I’m disappointed, we’ll pay for the picture but it takes the gloss off a bit when I have to answer questions about pretty meaningless incidents instead of the character the team showed,” Hodgson said.

The former Liverpool manager was pleased to return to Stoke’s ground and get a point from the game, after being embarrassed earlier in the season while with his former club.

“You’ve always got to be pleased when you come to Stoke and get a point, especially when you play as well as we did,” Hodgson said. “It was a good team performance, I’m very happy with that and the point keeps us going in the right direction.”

And the Englishman refused to be drawn on Vela’s crucial goal, simply noting that, after seeing four shots in the last minute saved by Asmir Begovic, his side got what they deserved from the game.

“There was a lot of bodies in there, I couldn’t say quite frankly if it was [offside] or not,” Hodgson said. “But whenever you consider a goal like that you are entitled to be angry. But I think one goal is the least we deserved for our efforts.”

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has revealed that the club are considering re-signing former players Daniel Parejo and Jose Callejon at the end of the season.

The pair are both Real academy graduates who failed to make the first-team grade, but have impressed since leaving the Bernabeu.

Parejo, 21, has emerged as one of the hottest prospects in the Primera Division since joining Getafe in 2009 and has been in sparkling form this season.

The midfielder, who was on loan in England with QPR in 2008, is joined on Real’s radar by Espanyol’s former Spain Under-21 winger Callejon.

The 24-year-old has excelled for Espanyol since arriving at Estadi Cornella-El Prat in 2008 and has scored six goals and contributed five assists this season.

Real inserted first option buy-back clauses in both players’ contracts, with Parejo thought to be available for around €5 million, while Callejon would cost in the region of €8 million.

“(Daniel) Parejo and (Jose) Callejon are two possibilities we are contemplating in June,” Real president Perez told radio station Cadena Ser.

Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe will return to training later this week after receiving the all-clear following an ankle scare.

Spurs manager Harry Redknapp initially revealed that Defoe had suffered an injury during the club’s warm-weather training camp in Dubai on Sunday, it was feared he would face a spell on the sidelines.

However the club have said the England international had been scanned and no significant damage was detected.

“Jermain Defoe will return to training on the squad’s return home this week after undergoing x-rays on his foot following his participation in today’s session,” a statement on Spurs’ official website confirmed.

“The x-rays were clear and the striker is expected to rest tomorrow as a precaution to allow any possible soft tissue irritation to settle.”

Defoe broke down during a session in Al Ahli’s Rashid Stadium on Sunday where Spurs were training as part of their five-day break between matches.

Former West Ham and Pompey frontman Defoe is yet to score in the league this season and initial news of his injury led Redknapp due to bemoan his lengthy list of walking wounded.

“Defoe has an injury again. He’s had a problem with his ankle before and it didn’t feel too good,” Redknapp had told Dubai-based newspaper The National. “We’re trying to finish in the top four and it’s so close. But we’ve got so many players injured, people forget.

“We’ve got Tom Huddlestone, Younes Kaboul, Ledley King, [Jonathan] Woodgate, [Gareth] Bale, [Rafael] Van der Vaart. If you could pick a team of injured players it would be a fantastic team.”

Spurs will return to England on Wednesday ahead of their Premier League match at Wolves on Sunday. Another of the club’s injured players, Vedran Corluka, is expected to be out for two months, which will give Alan Hutton a chance to stake his claim to be the club’s first-choice right-back once more.

The Scot’s last game for Spurs came a month ago when he needlessly barged into Clint Dempsey in the penalty box to gift Fulham their second goal in the Cottagers’ 4-0 rout over their neighbours.

Hutton was rumoured to have had a dressing-room bust-up with Redknapp following the match at Craven Cottage, but Redknapp insists he has not fallen out with the former Rangers man.

“Alan had a groin strain, but he’s fit now,” Redknapp said. “I changed it after Fulham; I brought Corluka back in and we went and won four games on the spin, went to Milan and won. But that’s football: now Charlie [Corluka] is injured, so Alan’s got a chance to get back in the team.”

Tottenham followed up their momentous 1-0 win at the San Siro with a sub-par performance in a 3-1 defeat to Blackpool seven days later. The result put a serious dent in the club’s ambitions for a top-four place, leaving them two points ahead of Chelsea having played one more match.

Redknapp admits the defeat at Bloomfield Road was a big blow for his side, but has urged them to bounce back this weekend.

“We had been playing so well and everything just went wrong on the day,” he said. “But we have to come back from that now.”
