Louis van Gaal looks set to stay on as Bayern Munich coach, but will be released from his contract a year early in the summer according to reports in Germany.
It had been thought the Dutchman would be sacked in the wake of Saturday’s 3-1 defeat at Hannover, which followed on closely from losses to Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga and Schalke in the DFB-Pokal semi-final.
But following a lengthy board meeting on Sunday, it appears the directors are split with the lack of a suitable replacement a significant factor in Van Gaal’s favour.
Honorary president Franz Beckenbauer voiced his support for Van Gaal by saying in the Bild newspaper: ”He has made mistakes but in the past has proven to be a great coach. I would prefer him than a short-term solution.”
Van Gaal took training as normal while the club hierarchy debated his future, but a club statement on his position is expected later on Monday.
