Yaya Toure believes Manchester City have the potential to become even better than his former club Barcelona in future seasons.
Toure left Camp Nou in order to become yet another expensive acquisition for City last summer and has helped the club occupy a top-three place in the Premier League, leaving them well placed to qualify for the Champions League for the first time.
Although Barcelona are currently regarded as the best club side in football, Toure does not see why City cannot become even more impressive than the Catalans in years to come.
“You cannot compare Barcelona with City right now because Barca are at the top and have top-quality players,” Toure said. “They have Leo Messi, Xavi, Andres Iniesta and Dani Alves, who are fantastic. But we are still signing new players.
“In a couple of years we could be better than Barcelona. What we need to do is continue to work hard and improve with every game. I keep saying to my brother Kolo and my family that City have great players but we need to continue to work hard to become great.”
Toure has also reiterated that City’s priority this season remains finishing in the top four, despite their ongoing participation in the FA Cup and Europa League.
“Our target is still to be in the Champions League next year – that is very important for this club,” he said. “But it will be tough to stay in there because Liverpool are coming and I’m sure Chelsea will be back.”
