Lecce 2-4 Lazio

Lazio beat 10-man Lecce tonight but their efforts were in vain as they were denied the fourth and final Champions League spot by Udinese’s draw against AC Milan.

Needing to win and hope Udinese lost, Lazio never trailed against a defiant Lecce at the Via del Mare.

Lecce’s Manuel Coppola cancelled out Tommaso Rocchi’s opener before Mauro Zarate restored the Roman club’s advantage in the 35th minute.

Ignacio Piatti brought Lecce back on level terms before the interval.

Zarate put the visitors ahead early in the second half from the penalty spot after Lecce goalkeeper Massimiliano Benassi had fouled Rocchi inside the area.

Benassi was shown a red card, too, leaving his team to play with 10 men from the 52nd minute.

Lazio extended their lead thanks to an own goal from Giuseppe Vives shortly after the hour mark as they cruised to a win that ultimately did not matter because of events in Udine.

The result means Lazio finished level on 66 points with Udinese but it is the latter that will play in Europe’s elite club competition after having a better head-to-head record over the campaign with the Romans.

Lecce, meanwhile, end the campaign in 17th place, the last position of safety with 41 points from 38 games.

The visitors started strongly and went ahead in the sixth minute.

A fast counter-attack from Lazio saw Rocchi race inside the area and fire towards the bottom right corner where Benassi could not reach.

Lecce showed more determination and got their first equaliser in the 32nd minute.

Vives fed Coppola inside the area and his right-footed strike beat Lazio goalkeeper Fernando Muslera.

Rocchi then served Zarate in the heart of the area and the Argentinian forward struck the ball past Benassi and into the back of the net.

The hosts equalised again in the 41st minute when Piatti drove the ball in from 13 yards.

Lecce suffered their double blow soon after the restart.

Benassi brought down Rocchi inside the box and the referee pointed to the spot before giving the keeper his marching orders.

Mauro Zarate coolly struck the spot-kick towards the top left corner to beat substitute goalkeeper Antonio Rosati.

Lazio made it 4-2 in the 62nd minute after Vives deflected the ball into his own net from Zarate’s corner kick.

Lecce, following the sending-off, struggled to put a good move together the rest of the way.

Bari 0-2 Lecce

Jeda was the difference as Luigi De Canio’s Lecce completed their great escape from relegation, with a win over their already-doomed arch-rivals confirming Serie A survival for another season.

The Brazilian’s opened the scoring in the 52nd minute and then saw his 80th-minute shot – which was going off target – turned into his net by Bari’s Andrea Masiello.

The result means the Giallorossi are safe with a week of the season remaining, as rivals Sampdoria, who started the game two points behind the Giallorossi in the final relegation place, lost 2-1 at home to Palermo.

The win capped a superb revival from De Canio’s men, who had snapped a run of three games without a win with a surprise 2-1 win over Napoli last weekend which dragged them out of the bottom three.

And it sealed a miserable home campaign for rock-bottom Bari, with the San Nicola saying goodbye to top-flight football after a season which has seen the hosts take just 21 points with one game to go.

Lecce looked like they meant business from the start with Jeda bringing a fine save out of home goalkeeper Jean Francois Gillet on 22 minutes, before Alessandro Parisi missed Bari’s first chance with a long-range drive.

Gillet saved from Djamel Mesbah just before the break, then David di Michele came close to breaking the deadlock for the visitors in first half injury time when he fired inches over the bar.

Jeda settled Lecce’s nerves by heading the opener direct from Mesbah’s corner, but di Canio’s men still looked vulnerable and Bari substitute Francesco Grandolfo shot just wide on 77 minutes.

Play was halted for a few minutes when fans were throwing flares near Rosati’s goalmouth – but after a short delay play resumed.

And Lecce sealed victory 10 minutes from time when Jeda’s shot was deflected past his own goalkeeper by Masiello.

Massimo Donati shot just wide for Bari in injury-time – but survival, and revenge for a 1-0 defeat in January’s match between the teams at the Stadio Via del Mare – was Lecce’s.

Bari v Lecce: Preview

Lecce coach Luigi De Canio has urged his players to show the same determination that saw them beat Napoli in the last round when they visit Bari tomorrow.

The Giallorossi beat Napoli 2-1 to climb to 17th in the standings, two points clear of the drop zone with two games remaining.

With 18th-placed Sampdoria hosting Palermo this weekend, De Canio is hopeful this could be the weekend that sees his team finally defend their Serie A status.

“We have two more games left to play and we have to get a win on Sunday and hope that Palermo grant us a favour by beating Samp,” he said.

Javier Chevanton’s late goal – only awarded when the referee overruled his assistant’s original decision not to give it – handed Lecce victory over Napoli and kept their fight for Serie A survival alive.

“This victory allowed us to remain in the battle to avoid the drop,” De Canio said. “But that will mean nothing if we lose on Sunday.

“We have to show the same hunger and determination that we displayed against Napoli.”

Lecce’s main weakness this season has been their backline.

They have the leakiest defence in the competition with 62 goals given away in 36 games.

However, Lecce defender Nenad Tomovic believes his team must put their technical weaknesses to one side and be mentally ready.

“At this time, the physical aspect is not as important as the mental one,” he said. “We need to be psychologically ready for the two finals that await us.”

Rivals Bari have nothing to play for except pride tomorrow.

The Stadio San Nicola will be sold out as the city of Bari hosts its last Serie A match for the foreseeable future.

Bari are already doomed to Serie B football – 24 months after gaining promotion to Italy’s top flight.

Last weekend’s 2-1 loss at Palermo marked their 23rd defeat of the campaign and left the Galletti at the foot of the standings.

“We have had some good moments with wins against Juventus and draws against AC Milan and Napoli, but those highlights don’t cancel out a dreadful season,” said Bari midfielder Massimo Donati.

Lecce will be without striker Daniele Corvia, who serves a one-match ban.

Lecce 2-1 Napoli

Javier Chevanton’s controversial strike two minutes from time lifted Lecce to a key victory in their fight for survival at the foot of Serie A.

Chevanton’s late goal – only awarded when the referee overruled his assistant’s original decision not to give it – settled a fiery encounter in which both sides had a man sent off in a dramatic second half.

Daniele Corvia opened the scoring for the hosts from the penalty spot on 49 minutes but the same player received his marching orders for a second yellow card just five minutes later.

Giuseppe Mascara pulled the sides level on 67 minutes and with 16 minutes remaining Edinson Cavani made it 10 men apiece as he, too, saw red for a second booking.

The entertaining contest looked set to end in stalemate until Chevanton’s dramatic late intervention, and Lecce will now be hoping Sampdoria draw a blank in their late kick-off against Genoa to ensure they remain above the drop zone heading into the final two games of the season.

The result also had implications at the other end of the table, with defeat dealing a blow to Napoli’s hopes of pipping Inter Milan to the runners-up spot in the final standings.

Walter Mazzarri’s third-placed side now trail Inter by four points with just six left to play for.

Lecce v Napoli: Preview

Lecce will let their football do the talking as they attempt to secure their Serie A status, according to defender Nenad Tomovic.

His side head into tomorrow’s clash with high-flying Napoli in the final relegation place, but just one point behind Sampdoria and two behind Cesena.

A look at the form sheet is not encouraging for Lecce fans, with just one point taken from the last three games, but Tomovic believes that does not tell the whole story.

“Right now there is not much to say, we can only make our football speak for itself,” Tomovic told www.uslecce.it. “We all know what our situation is and everyone has to give his best.

“The last matches we’ve been playing well, but we didn’t succeed in gaining points, and that’s what counts in the end, but we are still confident and it all depends on us.”

Tomorrow they come up against a third-placed Napoli side who, despite having seen their title chances fade away, have had an impressive season, spearheaded by strikers Edinson Cavani, who has 26 league goals to his name, and Ezequiel Lavezzi.

“In my opinion Lavezzi has to be feared the most, even though Cavani, with his 26 goals, is dangerous too,” said Tomovic.

With the title out of reach for Napoli, all that remains for them is a battle with Inter Milan for second place.

For Cavani, on loan from Serie A rivals Palermo, the only goal remaining is to avoid the qualifying rounds of the Champions League.

“Unity has been instrumental to the team this season,” he said. “From the beginning I felt we all had a great desire to win.

“We never gave up and today we are aiming to make the Champions League without the preliminary round.”
