Former Catania boss Diego Simeone has returned to Argentina to take on his third managerial job in 14 months, stepping into the hotseat at struggling Racing Club.

Simeone, 41, left Catania on June 1 after less than four months in Italy but the former Argentina international has wasted little time in securing another position.

He returns to Racing Club, where he began his managerial career in 2006 after hanging up his boots, for a second spell at Estadio Presidente Juan Domingo Peron.

The appointment marks his sixth job in five years but Simeone insisted he is fully committed to reviving the fortunes the seven-time Primera Division champions.

“We have to plan our objectives step by step,” Simeone said. “After finishing 15th [in the Clausura], we will have to take things slowly and with great care.

“We know that we are growing, but the plain fact is that we came 15th. The first aim is to get into a cup competition, something that hasn’t happened for a while here.”

Simeone, who has 106 international caps for the Albiceleste, won the Apertura with Esudiantes in 2006 and the Clausura with River Plate, before moving on to San Lorenzo and then Catania.

Serie A club Catania say that Liverpool have expressed interest in their Argentine defender Matias Silvestre.
Silvestre, 26, has been playing for the Sicilian club for the past three-and-a-half seasons, after transferring from Boca Juniors and has since become captain of the Rossazzurri.

The defender has been a standout in Vincenzo Montella’s side and Catania general manager Pietro Lo Monaco stated earlier this year that he expected the South American to head on to a bigger stage in the summer.

Lo Monaco now says that it is Liverpool, along with Villareal, who are leading the charge to lure Silvestre away from Italy next season.

“Top of the list of those moving on is Silvestre,” Lo Monaco told Itasportpress. “I’d struggle to keep him here, considering what a great player he is. There are two Italian clubs tracking him, but Liverpool and Villarreal are also interested in Silvestre.”

Vincenzo Montella has been appointed the new coach of Catania on a two-year deal.

The Serie A side confirmed the news on their official website with Montella taking the reins from Diego Simeone, who left the post last week.

Montella guided Roma to a sixth-placed finish in Serie A this term but was not offered a contract extension to remain at the Stadio Olimpico.

He will be officially unveiled by the Sicilian club at a press conference on Friday.

Catania ended the season in 13th place, 10 points clear of the relegation zone having lost just two of their last 10 league games.

Vincenzo Montella is the leading candidate to take charge of Catania next season, the club confirmed.

Montella guided Roma to a sixth-placed finish in Serie A this term but has yet to be offered a contract extension to remain at the Stadio Olimpico.

”Montella remains favourite for the job,” said Catania club administrator Pietro Lo Monaco. ”We will take another four or five days before we make our decision.”

Former Lecce coach Luigi De Canio is considered a possible alternative should Catania fail to lure Montella to Sicily.

Catania have parted company with coach Diego Simeone.

Simeone, who had been put in charge in January after the club sacked Marco Giampaolo, had one year left on his contract.

A statement from Catania read: ”After four months of great work and having considered new professional possibilities, Catania club administrator Pietro Lo Monaco and coach Diego Pablo Simeone have reached a mutual agreement to terminate the coach’s contract.

”The club wishes the coach and his staff all the best in the future.”

The Former Argentina and Lazio midfielder had an impressive run with Catania, who ended the season in 13th place – 10 points clear of the relegation zone. Under Simeone, Catania lost just two of their last 10 league games.

There is media speculation that Simeone will now move on to coach in Spain’s Primera Liga.
