Wolfsburg began the 2011-12 Bundesliga campaign in convincing fashion as they slayed FC Cologne 3-0 on Saturday.

Patrick Helmes broke the deadlock in the 16th minute before a late red card for Cologne’s Milivoje Novakovic dented the home side’s chances of claiming a point. Marcel Schafer then doubled Wolfsburg’s lead and Helmes netted his second of the game to wrap up the result.

Bundesliga new boys FC Augsburg earned a point in their opening match of the campaign, playing out an entertaining 2-2 stalemate with SC Freiburg. Papiss Demba Cisse put Freiburg ahead, but Sascha Molders restored parity only for Cedric Makiadi to swiftly restore their Freiburg’s lead. However, with ten minutes remaining, Molders pinched a draw.

VfB Stuttgart cruised to a 3-0 success versus Schalke as Cacau, Martin Harnik and Shinji Okazaki all struck for Bruno Labbadia’s team. Elsewhere, a second-half brace from Markus Rosenberg ensured Werder Bremen defeated Kaiserslautern 2-0.

Hannover 96 were 2-1 victors against TSG Hoffenheim in a match of two penalties. Jan Schlaudraff handed Hannover 96 a 14th-minute advantage before Sejad Salihovic kept his cool from the penalty spot. Mohammed Abdellaoue then also bagged a spot-kick to secure all three points for Hannover 96.

Wolfsburg playmaker Diego is keen on a move to Atletico Madrid with the Spanish club making an official bid for the midfielder, according to the Brazilian’s agent.

Diego has been on the outer with coach Felix Magath, and the player himself last week stated, “I don’t want to be at Wolfsburg any longer”. His father and agent Djair da Cunha has now revealed his son would look forward to fitting in at the Vicente Calderon.

“A player like him will be great for Atletico; he has quality and I think he can adapt really well to [coach Gregorio] Manzano’s scheme. Diego is thrilled with the idea,” Da Cunha told AS.

The former Juventus man will likely be required to take a pay cut in order to complete the move, but da Cunha has suggested that will not be an issue.

“Diego has made every possible effort; now we will wait for both clubs to find a way,” he added. “There is time until the end of August. We would like it to be solved soon, but that does not depend on us.”

Brazilian midfielder Diego has said that he is considering a move to Atletico Madrid, claiming he does not want to play for Wolfsburg anymore.

The German side were embarrassingly humbled in the German Cup by Regionalliga Nord side RB Leipzig on Friday night and, having fallen out of favour with the management staff, Diego is set to move on this summer.

“There is an official offer [from Atletico Madrid],” Diego told Kicker. “We have had contact with other clubs, but Atletico is a concrete option. I don’t want to be at Wolfsburg any longer.”

Meanwhile, Real Sociedad winger Antoine Griezmann could be set to follow him after revealing his admiration for Atletico.

The club have €45 million to spend after selling Sergio Aguero to Manchester City and could strengthen further with the 20-year-old Frenchman who has been touted as one of the hottest prospects in Spain.

“I [have] thought a lot about it. I [have] had time. I [have] chosen but it’s my president [that] will decide,” Griezmann told L’Equipe. “Atletico are a great club, very popular. I want to grow alongside players like Diego Forlan and Diego Costa.”

A hat-trick from Daniel Frahn saw RB Leipzig record a shock 3-2 win over Wolfsburg in the first round of the DFB-Pokal.

The Regionalliga Nord side stormed into a 2-0 lead with Germany Under-19 international Frahn scoring in the sixth minute and doubling the lead 11 minutes later.

Wolfsburg were level before the half hour mark with two goals in three minutes. Srdjan Lakic pulled one back in the 25th-minute before veteran midfielder Hasan Salihamidzic equalised.

Frahn then completed his hat-trick on the stroke of half-time and Leipzig held on to pick up a memorable victory.

Stuttgart advanced after goals from Ermin Bicakcic and Zdravko Kuzmanovic saw them win 2-1 at Wehen, a 28th minute Zlatko Janjic penalty proving to be only a consolation for the hosts.

Borussia Monchengladbach beat SSV Jahn Regensburg 3-1 to reach the second round. Martin Stanzl and Marco Reus put the Bundesliga side in control with first-half goals.

Tobias Schweinsteiger, older brother of Germany international Bastian, then pulled one back from the spot after 30 minutes before Igor De Camargo wrapped up the win.

1860 Munich twice came from behind to win 3-2 at VfL Osnabruck after extra time. Gerrit Wegkamp and Jan Mauersberger gave the hosts the lead but Benjamin Lauth and Kevin Volland pulled 1860 level on both occasions before Lauth scored the winner in extra time.

RW Essen recovered from a last-minute equaliser to beat Union Berlin 4-3 on penalties. Timo Brauer and Benedikt Koep put Essen 2-0 up before Patrick Zoundi and Simon Terodde took the game to extra time. Neither side could find a winner but Essen held their nerve in the shootout.

Erzgebirge Aue needed extra time to beat FC Saarbrucken 3-1 with Jan Hochscheidt and Mike Konnecke grabbing the vital goals.

Thomas Paulus had given Erzgebirge the lead through a 35th minute penalty but Mark Lerandy levelled for Saarbrucken.
