Roma expect midfielder Daniele De Rossi to pen a new contract amid reported interest from Manchester City, according to Giallorossi chief executive Claudio Fenucci.

De Rossi’s future has been the subject of speculation for a while, with the 28-year-old yet to agree a new contract with the club.

The Italy international’s current deal expires next summer but Fenucci insists there is an acceptable offer on the table and he fully expects De Rossi to commit his future to the club.

“We have presented an offer to extend to De Rossi, and I think it is in the interest of the player and club to continue this relationship,” Fenucci is quoted as saying by La Repubblica.

“We just have to find the right balance and I am convinced that in the end we will come out on top. As is the case in these matters, there is a request from the player and an offer from the club.

“It’s about structuring the contract based on this viewpoint; a flexible deal to suit the player’s wishes and the Roma of the future.”

The Roma board have shown their willingness to back new boss Luis Enrique in the transfer market after welcoming the likes of Bojan and Maarten Stekelenburg to the Stadio Olimipco this summer, and the Giallorossi manager sees De Rossi as an important part of his plans.

Sporting director Walter Sabatin outlined the club’s desire to hold onto De Rossi last week, saying: “Daniele is not subject to negotiations, as he has never and will never be on the market. We are in talks over the renewal and will not begin any process with other clubs. He is not for sale.

“I’d prefer to have long negotiations over the contract renewal and risk losing him in a year than let him go today. The club will do everything possible to keep hold of De Rossi.”

Roma forward Mirko Vucinic is “very close” to joining Manchester United, according to his agent, as chief exec David Gill suggested that United may yet add more personnel this summer.

Montenegro international Vucinic recently requested a transfer from Roma and was widely expected to join big-spending Juventus.

“We are very close to Manchester United,” agent Alessandro Lucci told LaSignoraInGiallorosso. “The meeting was yesterday and there were no formal offers, but the English club made it clear they very much appreciate Mirko. “We will know more in the next few days.”

The last few days have seen Sir Alex Ferguson suggest that United’s transfer business is closed for the summer but chief executive David Gill has suggested to the contrary.

With Luka Modric seemingly bound for Chelsea if he leaves Tottenham and Samir Nasri earmarked for a move to Manchester City should Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger’s attempts to keep hold of the Frenchman fail, only Wesley Sneijder appears attainable from the three players most regularly mentioned as potential recruits.

However, the overall cost of getting Sneijder from Inter Milan has so far proved prohibitive.

Gill says there are no discussions currently ongoing, as Ferguson has repeatedly stated.

But it has always been assumed Ferguson would make another move at some stage and Gill has hinted that could well be the case.

“We are looking at one more player to bring in,” Gill told MUTV. “Nothing is happening and nothing is imminent but we will see what happens when we get home.

“There will still be 31 days of the transfer window to see if anything develops. “The important point to understand, and Alex has made clear, is that we need someone who is going to improve the quality of the squad.

“We have a great squad and to get into that squad you need to be a world class player. If you can’t get the players you want, there is no point buying someone for the sake of it.

“But you never know. There is often movement in August. I am not saying I am working on anything specific because I’m not. But that situation could change quickly when we get back to Carrington.”

Roma are close to securing a deal for Netherlands keeper Maarten Stekelenburg from Ajax.

The keeper, a star at last year’s World Cup, has been targetted Roma for most of the summer but previous bids for him were below Ajax’s valuation.

His agent Franco Parisi, believes a deal is close. “We are working to close the differences,” Parisi told Romanews.eu. “The matter must be sorted within the next 24 hours. If it isn’t an agreement may never arrive.”

Despite Steklenburg being out of contract next year, Roma’s 5 million euro was rebuffed by Ajax but the offer is now believed to have increased to 8 million euros.

Paris Saint-Germain have announced the signing of Roma striker Jeremy Menez and midfielder Blaise Matuidi from St Etienne on three-year deals.

Following the takeover by Qatar Sports Investments in June, PSG have been flexing their financial muscles and brought in Kevin Gameiro from Lorient for €11 million.

Now they have added Menez, 24, who won the first of his five caps for France in a friendly against Norway last August and tough-tackling Matuidi, who also made his debut in the same game.

Brazilian Leonardo became director of football at PSG on July 13 and more deals, including possible moves for QPR midfielder Adel Taarabt and Palermo’s Javier Pastore, are expected.

Valenciennes’ Serbian centre-back Milan Bisevac is also believed to be close to a switch to Paris, while Leonardo has similarly identified Benfica’s Luisao as a target to strengthen in defence.

The man who brought Javier Pastore to Italy while working at Palermo has claimed that new Roma signing Erik Lamela can make the same impact on Serie A.

Walter Sabatini, who now works as sporting director at Roma, has been credited with finding Pastore at Huracan and has now worked his second South American deal in order to bring the highly-rated River Plate star Lamela to the Eternal City.

“Bringing [Pastore] to Italy when I worked at Palermo is one of my biggest successes. He has really made an impact in Serie A,” he told Il Corriere dello Sport. “He’s a very special player, but he will not move to Roma this summer.

“I have already said it before that Roma have made a big coup on the transfer market. Lamela can do for Roma what Pastore has done for Palermo in the past two seasons.”

Meanwhile, fellow new signing Bojan has spoken of his desire to emulate ex-Barca team-mate Thierry Henry and Dutch legend Johan Cruyff, who both wore No. 14 with distinction.

“I chose No. 14 because the other numbers were taken, and plus it is a shirt which was worn by great players like Cruyff and my great friend Henry,” Bojan told Roma Channel. “I want to think about Roma and work with Luis Enrique as he determined my move here, and I want to thank him.

“Pep Guardiola is [in] the past. I want to think about the present and I am happy to have joined Roma.”
