Napoli v Internazionale: Preview

Napoli striker Ezequiel Lavezzi has urged his team-mates to make sure they secure a place in the Champions League group stages when they face Inter Milan at Stadio San Paulo tomorrow.

The Naples club are currently third in the Serie A table, with fourth-placed Udinese six points behind with two rounds of fixtures to go.

That leaves Walter Mazzarri’s side needing just a point to make sure they avoid the qualifying rounds of Europe’s showpiece club tournament, as well as recording their best league finish since the days when the likes of Diego Maradona and Antonio Careca plied their trade for the club.

And Lavezzi does not want to head to the final day of the season with third place still in the balance.

“We deserve a great achievement, we are missing one point and need to take it,” said the Argentinian.

“We are aware that with one point we reach a goal that we have pursued throughout the year. But I am sure we will succeed.

“Our ambition is always to get to the top, but looking back at last summer we did not expect to get so high.

“But we deserve to be here. Now there are six points up for grabs, we still need to get something and we will give everything.

“We have a large squad and on this basis we will grow together as a team. New players will arrive in the summer and hopefully we will be able to fight again for great things next season.”

Inter, who reached the Coppa Italia final in midweek, are not yet guaranteed second spot as they lie just four points ahead of Napoli, and they have already missed out on the title to city rivals AC Milan, but manager Leonardo says he has no regrets about his decision to join Inter.

The former Rossoneri boss said: “I don’t have regrets. The rapport with [president Massimo] Moratti is still perfect, even after my difficult decision to come here from Milan.”

Juventus have vehemently denied reports they have approached Napoli coach Walter Mazzarri about the possibility of replacing Luigi Del Neri.

Mazzarri, who has guided Napoli to a top-four finish in Serie A, has been strongly linked with a move to the Bianconeri hotseat this summer. However, Juventus general director Giuseppe Marotta said: ”Mazzarri? I categorically deny any contact.

”We have a great rapport with (Napoli president Aurelio) De Laurentiis and we respect the rules. We speak to Del Neri on a daily basis and we, just like the club, work towards the future.

”We have very clear idea with regard to our coach. We have two games remaining and we will take a decision after our game against Parma on Sunday.”

Del Neri, who is in his first season at Juve, is under contract with the Turin giants until June 2012. The former Chievo tactician has endured a difficult campaign with injuries and a lack of continuity having hindered Juve.

Juve were held to a 2-2 draw against Chievo on Monday to see their hopes of finishing in the top four fade away and lie five points behind fourth-place Udinese with two games remaining.

”The stats are clear,” Marotta said. ”We are unbeaten in eight games but we have drawn four times in that run and thrown away a 2-0 lead in three of those games against smaller teams.”

Furious Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis has ripped into his players following a 2-1 defeat at relegation-threatened Lecce on Sunday, claiming they are not fit to wear the Azzurri shirt.

Javier Chevanton’s controversial late strike earned last season’s Serie B champions Lecce a vital victory at the Stadio via del Mare.

Napoli, who earlier this season were challenging for the Serie A title, need to take one more point from their final two matches to secure a Champions League berth but De Laurentiis was not happy with the performance at the weekend.

De Laurentiis told Italian television channel Rai 2: “The game was decided by a last-minute goal, it is true. But it was a performance that made me very sad.

“A goal such as Chevanton’s indicates the presence of a team very immature and not ready to compete at the highest levels. We did not play as a cohesive group and were not able to concentrate at the decisive moments.

“The players were not worthy to wear the jersey and to represent the colours of Napoli.”

Coach Walter Mazzarri said his side had been “naive” but felt the loss was harsh. He told club website: “The team were inaccurate and naive, this is true, but showed the right determination. Perhaps we were a bit tired from the heat, but we did not deserve this [defeat].

“Now we look ahead. We will try to get the most out of the final two matches [against Inter Milan and Juventus] and finish as high as possible.”

Napoli will head into Sunday’s big match against second-placed Inter without star striker Edinson Cavani, who was sent off on Sunday night for two bookable offences.

Lecce 2-1 Napoli

Javier Chevanton’s controversial strike two minutes from time lifted Lecce to a key victory in their fight for survival at the foot of Serie A.

Chevanton’s late goal – only awarded when the referee overruled his assistant’s original decision not to give it – settled a fiery encounter in which both sides had a man sent off in a dramatic second half.

Daniele Corvia opened the scoring for the hosts from the penalty spot on 49 minutes but the same player received his marching orders for a second yellow card just five minutes later.

Giuseppe Mascara pulled the sides level on 67 minutes and with 16 minutes remaining Edinson Cavani made it 10 men apiece as he, too, saw red for a second booking.

The entertaining contest looked set to end in stalemate until Chevanton’s dramatic late intervention, and Lecce will now be hoping Sampdoria draw a blank in their late kick-off against Genoa to ensure they remain above the drop zone heading into the final two games of the season.

The result also had implications at the other end of the table, with defeat dealing a blow to Napoli’s hopes of pipping Inter Milan to the runners-up spot in the final standings.

Walter Mazzarri’s third-placed side now trail Inter by four points with just six left to play for.

Lecce v Napoli: Preview

Lecce will let their football do the talking as they attempt to secure their Serie A status, according to defender Nenad Tomovic.

His side head into tomorrow’s clash with high-flying Napoli in the final relegation place, but just one point behind Sampdoria and two behind Cesena.

A look at the form sheet is not encouraging for Lecce fans, with just one point taken from the last three games, but Tomovic believes that does not tell the whole story.

“Right now there is not much to say, we can only make our football speak for itself,” Tomovic told www.uslecce.it. “We all know what our situation is and everyone has to give his best.

“The last matches we’ve been playing well, but we didn’t succeed in gaining points, and that’s what counts in the end, but we are still confident and it all depends on us.”

Tomorrow they come up against a third-placed Napoli side who, despite having seen their title chances fade away, have had an impressive season, spearheaded by strikers Edinson Cavani, who has 26 league goals to his name, and Ezequiel Lavezzi.

“In my opinion Lavezzi has to be feared the most, even though Cavani, with his 26 goals, is dangerous too,” said Tomovic.

With the title out of reach for Napoli, all that remains for them is a battle with Inter Milan for second place.

For Cavani, on loan from Serie A rivals Palermo, the only goal remaining is to avoid the qualifying rounds of the Champions League.

“Unity has been instrumental to the team this season,” he said. “From the beginning I felt we all had a great desire to win.

“We never gave up and today we are aiming to make the Champions League without the preliminary round.”
