French goalkeeper Sebastien Frey has fired a parting shot at former club Fiorentina following his move to Genoa.

Frey signed a five-year contract with Il Grifone on Tuesday after being frozen out at the Stadio Artemio Franchi, and has declared himself proud to end his career in Liguria.

The 31-year-old told the club’s official website: ”I wish to thank the people of Florence and the Viola fans. I also hold much affection for my former team-mates. But I hope to never again see football terms like ‘loving the jersey’ or ‘the flag’. My own story has proved that these concepts are often used just to create a narrative.”

On his new club, he added: ”I signed a five-year contract, so it’s likely this will be my final professional club. I would be proud to end my career at Genoa. There are many reasons I chose Genoa. First of all, the president Enrico Preziosi, who wanted me.

”I’ve often thought of him as the club president with the best knowledge of Italian football. There’s a leadership here that brings out the best in young talent and revives players’ careers. That’s hugely important for a professional like me. I’ve joined one of the oldest clubs in Italy, where the fans live football passionately. I will fight with everything I’ve got to leave a big impression.”

Former France goalkeeper Sebastien Frey has completed his switch to Genoa from Fiorentina.

Fiorentina revealed the finishing touches on a five-year contract have been completed, after the deal had been revealed last week.

“ACF Fiorentina announces that it has sold, on a permanent basis, Sebastien Frey to Genoa CFC,” a statement on the club’s official website read. “The company thanks him for the seasons spent together and wish him the best achievements of success for the rest of his career.”

Frey spent six seasons with La Viola but had fallen down the pecking order at the club after a knee injury ruled him out for most of last season.

The 31-year-old, who made the last of his two France caps in 2008, is looking forward to resuming his career with Genoa.

“I can’t wait to get started,” he told Genoa’s official website. “On Tuesday, I’ll start house-hunting. I have already spoken to Dario (Dainelli, Genoa defender) and he’s told me the club is like a big family.”

Sebastien Frey has agreed a deal and will leave Fiorentina for Serie A rivals Genoa, subject to a medical.

Frey, 31, is one of Serie A’s stalwarts and has agreed a five-year-contract, moving for an undisclosed fee.

A statement on the club’s official website read: “Sebastien Frey will be the new goalkeeper of Il Grifone. President Enrico Preziosi has reached an agreement with Fiorentina for the transfer of the French goalkeeper.

“The ratification of the deal will be completed next week after a medical. Frey was highly motivated to join the club and strongly wanted to be a member of Il Grifone, agreeing to reduce his wages, in order to re-start his career with Genoa.”

Frey has previously appeared for Verona, Inter Milan and Parma before joining Fiorentina and has two international caps for France, though he is widely considered unfortunate to not have added to this tally.

Alberto Aquilani’s hopes of a return to Serie A with Fiorentina are in the balance with the player insisting on a permanent move.

It was thought Aquilani would sign for the Viola on loan for the 2011-12 campaign, just as he did last term with Juventus. But Aquilani does not want to be put in the same situation in 12 months’ time and is hankering for a full deal.

Aquilani, 27, made just nine Premier League starts for Liverpool in his debut season due to injury before the club moved the £20 million signing off the wage bill.

Despite receiving words of praise from Principal Owner John W Henry on Twitter recently, Aquilani is surplus to manager Kenny Dalglish’s requirements as he looks to reshape the squad further.

Aquilani’s agent, Franco Zavaglia, told Sportitalia: “As Alberto doesn’t yet fall in the plans of Liverpool, we want to find a solution so that next year the current situation will not reoccur again.

“The player wants to come to Italy on a definite transfer. I met (Fiorentina’s sporting director, Pantaleo) Corvino, and the club must think about it. It’s a difficult deal, but let’s see.

“There is a 50% chance that my client will transfer to Florence. Last year in August there was ‘magic’, let’s see if this year will be the same, there is still time.”

Youssouf Mulumbu claims he spurned interest from Fiorentina and Bayern Munich to stay at West Brom.

Mulumbu, 24, joined from Paris St Germain in 2009 and has become a key part of the West Brom midfield. Although some of Europe’s top clubs apparently showed interest, he signed a new three-year deal earlier this week.

“I heard about teams like Fiorentina and Bayern Munich being interested in me, but now is not the right time to go,” Mulumbu told the club’s official website. “I spoke to the board and they made me think about my situation and I think it is better for me to stay at West Brom.

“The club has shown me the desire in every respect to stay at the club. It means they want to build a big team and I’m glad to be involved. I know the gaffer; I know the club. They play good football and I think we can do much better.”
