West Ham have asked the Italian Football Federation to suspend their former striker Alessandro Diamanti’s registration with Brescia.

Diamanti left Upton Park to join the then Serie A side in August 2010, but the latest instalment of the £2 million transfer fee has not been paid, according to the Hammers.

A statement from West Ham read: “Due to the failure of Brescia to pay the latest instalment fee, West Ham have asked the FIGC (Italian Football Federation) to suspend the player’s registration and requested that the national association and FIFA impose sporting sanctions until the matter is resolved.”

Diamanti spent a year with the Hammers after joining from Livorno, hitting eight goals in 30 matches. He has since scored six goals in 31 appearances for Brescia and earned his first Italy cap.

Brescia v Fiorentina: Preview

Fiorentina coach Sinisa Mihajlovic has stressed the importance of ending the campaign with a win ahead of his side’s final game at Brescia tomorrow.

The Viola have endured a season of ups and downs and will finish no higher than ninth place regardless of this weekend’s results.

The Tuscan outfit has won just two of their last eight games, culminating in last weekend’s 1-1 draw against Bologna.

“It is vital to end the season well in order to be able to start a new campaign with the right mentality,” Mihajlovic said.

“In this way we will start the new season with more certainty and with a better approach.”

Mihajlovic, in his first season at the helm of the Viola, is already focusing on the future.

“Our aim is to bounce back,” he said. “We will sign players this summer that are motivated to prove themselves and to do well.

“As our club executives have said, we will open a new cycle next term and we are all looking forward to it.”

In the meantime, the Viola will seek only their fourth win on the road this season at the Mario Rigamonti stadium, which will be sold out tomorrow.

The city of Brescia hosts its last Serie A match for the foreseeable future, with the club having already been relegated to the second tier.

The Rondinelle go into the encounter on the back of a 1-0 loss at Cesena that was their 20th defeat of the campaign and left Brescia in 19th place.

Despite a disappointing season, which has seen Brescia win just seven times while losing 20 of 37 games, coach Giuseppe Iachini hopes he can remain at the club next term.

“I will meet with club president (Gino) Corioni at the end of the campaign,” said Iachini, whose contract expires this summer.

“I would like to stay and guide the team in Serie B and hopefully, to a return to Italy’s top flight next year.

“I have a strong bond with this club and this city.”

Cesena 1-0 Brescia

Cesena preserved their top-flight status, with a victory over already-relegated Brescia at Stadio Dino Manuzzi continuing their fine finish to the Serie A season.

The Cavallucci Marini were all but certain of their Serie A status for another year after just one defeat in their previous six games – but Emanuele Giaccherini’s goal just before the hour today guaranteed safety.

Massimo Ficcadenti’s men started brightly and in the eighth minute Paolo Sammarco hit the post with a right foot shot.

Veteran Brescia striker Andrea Caracciolo went close at the other end 12 minutes later, before Cesena’s Luis Jimenez saw a shot saved by young goalkeeper Nicola Leali.

Igor Budan headed over in the 26th minute, then Marco Parolo shot wide, before Giaccherini set up Sammarco for a 39th-minute shot he blazed high over the bar.

Cesena started the second half as they finished the first – on the front foot – and Giaccherini shot over in the 56th minute, then Budan saw an effort go narrowly wide two minutes later.

However, the breakthrough arrived soon after when Giaccherini’s low shot from the edge of the penalty box gave Leali no chance as it found the corner of his net.

After on-loan Atalanta midfielder Fabio Caserta had shot wide for the hosts, Brescia came close to an equaliser with 15 minutes remaining when Eder shot narrowly over from the edge of the penalty area.

Caserta went even closer in the 82nd minute after Parolo had set up the opening – but one goal proved enough and at the final whistle the majority of the crowd were able to celebrate an 11th victory of the campaign and successful preservation of their top-flight status over a team who also made the move up a year ago.

Cesena v Brescia: Preview

Cesena coach Massimo Ficcadenti has warned his team not to lose focus ahead of two very important games at the end of the Serie A season.

Ficcadenti was in celebratory mood after last weekend’s 2-0 win at Cagliari moved them a step closer to retaining their top-flight status.

The result lifted Cesena, who gained promotion to Serie A last summer, four points clear of 18th-place Sampdoria ahead of tomorrow’s game against Brescia.

“With a four-point advantage and with six points still up for grabs, for us it would be a suicide to be relegated,” said Ficcadenti. “But I am aware that in our last two games we will have to battle hard.

“I have seen everything in football and I know that this is no time for relaxation.

“We have clinched 40 points so far and we are close but yet not there. All is to play for.

“We have to be at our best for our difficult game against Brescia.”

Ficcadenti has reason to be confident as his side, who end the campaign at Genoa on May 22, have lost just once in their last six games.

Rivals Brescia travel to the Stadio Dino Manuzzi already planning for the future having seen their hopes of avoiding relegation crushed last weekend.

Sunday’s 2-1 defeat by Catania condemned Brescia to Serie B football.

The Rondinelle are 19th in the standings, seven points adrift of safety and unable to catch 17th-place Lecce.

“My players gave their all but it was not to be,” said Brescia coach Giuseppe Iachini. “We are disappointed with our campaign and perhaps we could have done better in certain games.

“Now we just have to look ahead to the future and try to return to Italy’s top flight as soon as possible.”

Brescia, who have won just once on the road this season, will be without the team’s top scorer Alessandro Diamanti, who is suspended.

Ficcadenti will have all of his players available.

Brescia 1-2 Catania

Brescia were today relegated from Serie A after defeat against Catania left them seven points from safety with two games to go.

Today’s loss was their 20th of the season and they are ending the season on a miserable run of form with just one win in 12, returning to Serie B after just one campaign in the top flight.

And they also finished with 10 men after substitute Davide Lanzafame quickly collected two yellow cards.

Giuseppe Iachini’s side started the game knowing a win was imperative and they created the first opening, with Catania goalkeeper Mariano Andujar pushing Alessandro Diamanti’s effort round the post.

Ezequiel Schelotto was narrowly wide with a header for Catania and seconds later was challenged as he shaped to shoot before the visitors went ahead.

Matias Silvestre was completely unmarked at the far post and he hit an unstoppable shot past Michele Arcari.

The hosts almost levelled on the stroke of half-time when Diamanti hit a free-kick from the edge of the box which forced Andujar to push the ball out for a corner.

Catania were the dominant attacking force and Alessandro Potenza was almost played through, while Gonzalo Bergessio pounced on some sloppy defending with Arcari quick to come off his line and smother the ball.

Brescia, though, were pushing for an equaliser and Lanzafame shot inches over as the Catania central defence maintained control.

The visitors then doubled their lead with a quarter of an hour remaining, Alejandro Gomez playing in Bergessio who finished well past Arcari.

Lanzafame, who had been on the pitch just 12 minutes and collected his first booking shortly before the second goal, received his marching orders in the 79th minute.

Brescia managed to pull one back when Diamanti scored a long-range free-kick in injury-time, but their one-season stay in Serie A was at an end.
