Spain coach Vicente del Bosque handed a first call-up to Thiago Alcantara when naming his squad for next Wednesday’s friendly against Italy in Bari.

Barcelona midfielder Thiago, 20, was born in Italy but moved to Spain as a child before going on to represent his adopted country at Under-17, Under-19 and Under-21 levels.

As the son of 1994 Brazilian World Cup winner Mazinho, there has been recent criticism over Brazil’s failure to call up Thiago, who helped Spain win the Under-21 European Championships. A spokesman for the Brazilian football federation (CBF) told Marca on Thursday: “Of course he would be of interest to [Brazil coach] Mano Menezes. Every Brazilian player has the chance to play for the Selecao.”

However, he has now been given his first senior call-up to the Spanish national side and Del Bosque said: “Thiago is here on sporting merit. Thiago grew up in Spain and has football roots here. Now he can choose which team he’ll play for. The first official game is binding.”

Mazinho added on Punto Radio: “I would have liked Thiago to play for Brazil but it wouldn’t have been just. He grew up at Barca and in Spain.”

The 22-man squad features a recall for Sevilla striker Alvaro Negredo, but the likes of Barcelona’s Carles Puyol, Benfica’s Joan Capdevila and Cesc Fabregas of Arsenal miss out.

Squad: Iker Casillas (Real Madrid), Jose Reina (Liverpool), Victor Valdes (Barcelona); Alvaro Arbeloa , Raul Albiol, Sergio Ramos (all Real Madrid), Gerard Pique (Barcelona), Andoni Iraola (Athletic Bilbao); Xabi Alonso (Real Madrid), Sergio Busquets, Andres Iniesta, Thiago Alcantara, Xavi (all Barcelona), Santi Cazorla (Malaga), Javi Martinez (Athletic Bilbao), David Silva (Manchester City); David Villa, Pedro Rodriguez (both Barcelona), Fernando Llorente (Athletic Bilbao), Fernando Torres (Chelsea), Alvaro Negredo (Sevilla), Juan Mata (Valencia).

Former Bari boss Eugenio Fascetti has told Antonio Cassano he must leave AC Milan to improve his prospects of playing for Italy at next summer’s European Championship.

Cassano, 29, has endured a frustrating spell at Milan since arriving at the San Siro last December, having started just nine Serie A games for the Rossoneri as they claimed the Scudetto.

And Fascetti, who gave Cassano his break as a 17-year-old at Bari, believes the forward should sign for Fiorentina, as he could be a regular starter for La Viola.

“I tell him to leave Milan and join Fiorentina, it’s the only way he can stay in the Nazionale,” Fascetti told Il Giornale. “Cesare Prandelli already told him that either he is a regular starter or he can forget the Azzurri jersey.

“In his shoes, I already would’ve made my decision. I read some journalists close to the Rossoneri camp think Cassano is sixth in the pecking order of strikers, even behind Alberto Paloschi. Is that acceptable? No, it isn’t.

“In Florence he’d have the chance to reunite with Alberto Gilardino, as they formed a great pair for the Under-21 side. They complete each other and seem really made to act as a partnership.

“Cassano could give Gila the service he needs to come back to scoring 20 goals. With Stevan Jovetic as well, it’d be a fairytale trident.”

Rumours abound in the Italian press that Sinisa Mihajlovic is keen to take Cassano to Fiorentina, with the former Real Madrid and Roma forward tipped to be used by Milan as a makeweight to bring La Viola midfielder Riccardo Montolivo to the club.

Bologna v Bari: Preview

Bari coach Bortolo Mutti has warned Bologna his relegated side are determined to leave Serie A on a high by winning at the Stadio Renato Dall’ Ara tomorrow.

Mutti’s players have been preparing for life in Serie B since their relegation was sealed earlier this month, while Bologna head into the final game of the season safe after securing their top-flight status last weekend.

“We want to go out with a win after this dreadful season which has ended in relegation,” said Mutti, who succeeded the sacked Giampiero Ventura earlier this year.

“It would be nice to finish with a victory and we will give our all for that to happen.”

The Galletti, who will end the campaign at the foot of the standings, have won just four of 38 games and their last victory dates back to April 3.

Last weekend’s 2-0 defeat against Lecce marked their fifth straight loss.

Mutti has plenty of injury worries ahead of tomorrow’s encounter, with strikers Georgy Rudolf and Abdi Ghezzal ruled out.

Marco Rossi and Jaime Romero are also considered unlikely to make the trip, while defenders Kamil Glik and Alessandro Parisi are both suspended.

Bologna will be looking for one final victory to make up for their dismal run of of form.

The Rossoblu have claimed just one win in their last 10 league games.

Alberto Malesani’s men are coming off a 1-1 draw at Fiorentina that saw them drop to 16th in the standings.

Bologna have not won since beating Lecce 1-0 on March 13 and Malesani understands just how much the club’s supporters are suffering.

“We want to end the season well for the sake of our fans and the club,” he said. “They deserve better.

“We have endured a very difficult month but we could have done better.

“Now we owe it to our fans to end the campaign with dignity.”

Bari 0-2 Lecce

Jeda was the difference as Luigi De Canio’s Lecce completed their great escape from relegation, with a win over their already-doomed arch-rivals confirming Serie A survival for another season.

The Brazilian’s opened the scoring in the 52nd minute and then saw his 80th-minute shot – which was going off target – turned into his net by Bari’s Andrea Masiello.

The result means the Giallorossi are safe with a week of the season remaining, as rivals Sampdoria, who started the game two points behind the Giallorossi in the final relegation place, lost 2-1 at home to Palermo.

The win capped a superb revival from De Canio’s men, who had snapped a run of three games without a win with a surprise 2-1 win over Napoli last weekend which dragged them out of the bottom three.

And it sealed a miserable home campaign for rock-bottom Bari, with the San Nicola saying goodbye to top-flight football after a season which has seen the hosts take just 21 points with one game to go.

Lecce looked like they meant business from the start with Jeda bringing a fine save out of home goalkeeper Jean Francois Gillet on 22 minutes, before Alessandro Parisi missed Bari’s first chance with a long-range drive.

Gillet saved from Djamel Mesbah just before the break, then David di Michele came close to breaking the deadlock for the visitors in first half injury time when he fired inches over the bar.

Jeda settled Lecce’s nerves by heading the opener direct from Mesbah’s corner, but di Canio’s men still looked vulnerable and Bari substitute Francesco Grandolfo shot just wide on 77 minutes.

Play was halted for a few minutes when fans were throwing flares near Rosati’s goalmouth – but after a short delay play resumed.

And Lecce sealed victory 10 minutes from time when Jeda’s shot was deflected past his own goalkeeper by Masiello.

Massimo Donati shot just wide for Bari in injury-time – but survival, and revenge for a 1-0 defeat in January’s match between the teams at the Stadio Via del Mare – was Lecce’s.

Bari v Lecce: Preview

Lecce coach Luigi De Canio has urged his players to show the same determination that saw them beat Napoli in the last round when they visit Bari tomorrow.

The Giallorossi beat Napoli 2-1 to climb to 17th in the standings, two points clear of the drop zone with two games remaining.

With 18th-placed Sampdoria hosting Palermo this weekend, De Canio is hopeful this could be the weekend that sees his team finally defend their Serie A status.

“We have two more games left to play and we have to get a win on Sunday and hope that Palermo grant us a favour by beating Samp,” he said.

Javier Chevanton’s late goal – only awarded when the referee overruled his assistant’s original decision not to give it – handed Lecce victory over Napoli and kept their fight for Serie A survival alive.

“This victory allowed us to remain in the battle to avoid the drop,” De Canio said. “But that will mean nothing if we lose on Sunday.

“We have to show the same hunger and determination that we displayed against Napoli.”

Lecce’s main weakness this season has been their backline.

They have the leakiest defence in the competition with 62 goals given away in 36 games.

However, Lecce defender Nenad Tomovic believes his team must put their technical weaknesses to one side and be mentally ready.

“At this time, the physical aspect is not as important as the mental one,” he said. “We need to be psychologically ready for the two finals that await us.”

Rivals Bari have nothing to play for except pride tomorrow.

The Stadio San Nicola will be sold out as the city of Bari hosts its last Serie A match for the foreseeable future.

Bari are already doomed to Serie B football – 24 months after gaining promotion to Italy’s top flight.

Last weekend’s 2-1 loss at Palermo marked their 23rd defeat of the campaign and left the Galletti at the foot of the standings.

“We have had some good moments with wins against Juventus and draws against AC Milan and Napoli, but those highlights don’t cancel out a dreadful season,” said Bari midfielder Massimo Donati.

Lecce will be without striker Daniele Corvia, who serves a one-match ban.
